Woman called emergency services to report theft of snowman

Police in Kent, England, have described a woman who called the emergency services to report the theft of a snowman as “completely irresponsible.” The woman rang 999 after noticing the snowman outside her house had vanished.
“There’s been a theft from outside my house,” she told the operator. “I haven’t been out to check on him for five hours but I went outside for a fag and he’s gone.” When asked who had disappeared, the woman said: “my snowman.” Chief inspector Simon Black said that the call “could have cost someone’s life if there was a genuine emergency and they couldn’t get through.”

The woman told the operator: “I thought that with it being icy and there not being anybody about he’d be safe. It ain’t a nice road but you don’t expect anybody to nick your snowman.” Black said that they had spoken with the woman and warned her not to call unless she was in an emergency.

Even though abusing the emergency services system is a prosecutable offence in Britain, she will not be charged. “In this case the woman genuinely thought this was a theft that she should report it because she’d used pound coins for the eyes and teaspoons for the arms,” Black added.

“Jigsaw expert” saves man’s cash!!!!!

(Reuters) – A Taiwan forensic scientist nicknamed the “jigsaw expert” has helped one fortunate man recover cash he accidentally shredded, piecing together the remains of 200 bills in just seven days.

The man, surnamed Lin, dropped a bag containing T$200,000 ($6,600) in T$1,000 bills into his plastics factory’s shredding machine last month.

With the help of a local official, Lin had the shredded notes passed on to the forensics division of the Justice Ministry’s special investigations unit, which offers a free service repairing damaged cash.

There 30-year veteran forensic scientist Liu Hui-fen put all the notes back together in seven days, a task, she was quoted as saying, that was “difficult” and “required patience.”

A ministry official told Reuters on Thursday that the unit receives about 250 cases of damaged notes each year after fires or similar incidents, and attempts to repair as many as possible free of charge.

The central bank has determined that the notes have been sufficiently restored to its requirement for three-quarter completeness, and will return the cash to the lucky Mr. Lin.

Python found inside washing machine

A scrap dealer in Poland was left in a spin when he opened the door of an abandoned washing machine – and found a 1.2m (4ft) python inside.

A python: washing machines are not its natural habitat

Henryk Kaszubski said the reptile probably caused the machine to break down and had been inside ‘for some time’.

The snake was rescued by wildlife experts and taken to nearby Warsaw Zoo, where it was said to be unharmed by its time in the machine.

Oldest duck in UK dies at age 22

A duck named Edwina, believed to be the oldest recorded living duck in the United Kingdom, has died at the age of 22. The mallard was first discovered by Ian Knight and Christine Christopher in a lake near their residence in the market town of Ringwood in Hampshire, England. Edwina, as she was later called, had been attacked by her family and abandoned by her own mother.Ian helped the duck to recover its health and, after a failed attempt to release the creature back into the wild, the duck was adopted as a family pet. She was originally given the male name Edward; however, when — to the shock of Christopher and Knight – it was discovered that she had the ability to lay eggs, her name was changed to Edwina. Some of the habits of the duck included drinking tea and swimming in a sink.

The creature gained popularity upon her 22nd birthday when the British Trust for Ornithology rendered Edwina the oldest recorded mallard in the United Kingdom. The Trust said that the oldest recorded age for a creature of that type in the wild in the country was 20 years and 5 months.

Edwina died peacefully on Monday inside her pen. Ian Knight commented, “She hadn’t been well over Christmas. Her legs were a bit wobbly and we were concerned that she wasn’t her normal self. We had been planning to take her to the vet’s when we discovered that she had passed away. It might sound silly to some people but 22 years is a long time to have a pet and we are heartbroken to have lost Edwina.” Knight also explained that “[s]he had become a bit of a celebrity and, after we appeared on television on her 22nd birthday, someone recognised me at Palma Airport in Majorca.”

Council workmen were left red-faced after misspelling the word “school”.

Contractors omitted the ‘C’ when they daubed ‘SHOOL KEEP CLEAR’ outside the gates of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School in the Lawrence Weston, Bristol.

It was hoped the wording would ease school run congestion – but has caused hilarity among parents and local residents.
